Hello LT Families,

Life Teen is back!  Welcome to our returning and new families.  I send out a Life Teen update once a month, but am sending this one early for September, so everyone is aware of what is going on in Life Teen.  Please take a few minutes to review this update.

Life Nights:  Below is a list of our Sunday Life Nights. I encourage our parents to ask their teens about the Life Nights.  Please do not hesitate to contact me for any questions.

8/18:  “Aloha Water Wars”- Teens…bring a change of clothes and a towel!

 Life Night Meals:

On Sunday Life Nights, we need to feed our teens dinner.  This is where we need our PARENTS to help.  Thank you to the families that signed up at the Round Up, but we still have many open dates for this semester.  Here is what you need to know:

  • St. Oliver’s will provide the funds ($175.00) for the meal
  • You will need to prepare the meal for approx 125+  people
  • Meal can be prepared in the church kitchen if needed (contact Lynn if you need to use the church kitchen), and is served buffet style in Room 6 (adjacent to the LT room)
  • Meal must be ready by 6pm
  • St. Oliver’s provides paper products, utensils and soda
  • After meal is served, you are responsible for the clean up of Room 6
  • You must turn in your receipts to Lynn Ory on Sunday evening of your meal.
  • Teens will eat almost anything…but NO NUTS.  We have several peanut allergies!
  • Meal Ideas:  Hot Dogs/Chips, Baked Potato Bar, Pasta, Nachos, Sloppy Joes, etc.

Here are our OPEN dates:  9/22, 10/20, 10/27, 11/3, 11/10, 11/17.  Please email me:  youthministry@stolivers.com if you can prepare a meal for the teens! WE NEED YOUR  HELP!!!!

 Life Teen Events:

  • Fall Retreat:  October 4-6, 2019 @ Covecrest in Tiger, GA.  Sign Up and Permission Slip can be found in the Life Teen room.  Permission slip and fee ($125) are due by 9/8/19.  Fee can be paid by check, cash or credit card.  If you need to make a payment plan, please contact me.

Parish Events:

  • Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Holy Day of Obligation):  Vigil Mass, Wednesday, August 14, 2019 @ 7pm, Thursday, August 15th @9am and 7pm (Bilingual Mass)  The parish is having a special collection of new school supplies for the SE Gwinnett Co-Op at the Vigil Mass.  Please bring donations!!
  • St. Oliver Plunkett Ministry Fair:  Following all Masses 8/17-8/18, please visit the Kane-Beltran Family Center to check out all the ministries that your parish offers you!  We want to continue to grow and evolve as a community serving God and our neighbor. Please join us as we Engage. Serve. Grow!

 Parent Info:

  • Adult Education:  Our Catholic Church encourages are parents to be leaders of the faith to their children.  St. Oliver’s offers our parents opportunities to help YOU grow in your faith.  Please check the bulletin (www.stolivers.com) for ongoing faith formation.  Here are a few upcoming opportunities:
    • Beholding His Glory (Women’s Bible Study):  2-9 week sessions.  Check the bulletin for all the details.
    • Recovering from Divorce:  13 week program to help recover from the emotional and spiritual trauma of divorce.  Check bulletin for additional info.
    • Financial Peace University:  We all need a plan for our money!  Check the bulletin for all the details.

 Service:  (Teens, check out the How Can I Serve Board in the Life Teen Room for service opportunities)

  • Pop Tab Collection:  Life Teen is collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald Atlanta houses.  You can drop off your donation to the Life Teen Office.
  • GROW (formerly Rowdy Roots):  Friday, 9/27/19, 6:15pm-845pm, in the Family Center.  Help our 3rd-5th graders enjoy a fun night.  Sign up on the “How Can I Serve” board in the LT room.

Fundraising:

  • 2019-2020 FUNDRAISER INFORMATION
  • St. Oliver’s provides fundraising opportunities for the teens in our Life Teen program.
  • Participation in Life Teen fundraisers is optional.
  • All proceeds from Life Teen fundraisers benefit the St. Oliver Life Teen program and teens who participate in the fundraiser.
  • Teens who participate in a St. Oliver fundraiser will receive a “benefit” from the fundraiser to be logged in the teen’s account.
  • Teens can use the benefit to reduce the expense of a St. Oliver Life Teen retreat/conference.
  • Please check with the Life Teen office for upcoming Fundraiser opportunities.
  • If you would like to be on the Life Teen fundraising committee or have a fundraising idea, please contact Lynn, Life Teen Youth Minister, via email youthministry@stolivers.com or at 770-978-6751, ext. 43.
  • Christmas Wreath Fundraiser will begin September 29thIf you are interested in participating, please sign up on the Life Teen Info board in the Life Teen room.
  • Mellow Mushroom Life Teen Fundraiser:  Tuesday, October 1st!  Parents…a NO COOK night.  Help us raise funds for our Life Teen program by eating at Mellow Mushroom in Snellville.  Great food, raffles and lots of fun!  More info to follow.
    • I am looking for gift cards/services for Life Teen to raffle at this fundraiser.  If you can donate gift cards/items/services that we can raffle during dinner time at Mellow Mushroom it will be appreciated!  Just let me know if you have something to donate!!!

Confirmation:

  • 1st Year
    • PARENT Meeting:  Wednesday, August 21, 2019.  English speaking Parent meeting is at 6:30pm in the Life Teen room and at 8pm for Hispanic speaking Parents in the Life Teen room.  This was originally advertised in the church bulletin as a Parent & Teen meeting, but has been changed to a PARENT ONLY meeting.
    • Teen Candidate Class:  Wednesday, September 4, 2019.  Class begins promptly at 7pm…teens should check in prior to 7pm!.  This 1st class is has an extended class time till 9pm.  In addition to the first class, we will review all the 1st Year Candidate requirements.
  • 2nd Year:
    • Teen Candidate class:  Wednesday, September 18, 2019.  Class begins promptly at 7pm…teens should check in prior to 7pm! EXTENDED CLASS TIME TILL 9PM.  In addition to the first class, we will review all the 2nd Year Candidate requirements.
    • CONFIRMATION LITURGY DATE:  Sunday, April 26, 2020.  Please save this date!!!!

Communication:

St. Oliver Plunkett Life Teen uses various ways to communicate to our Life Teen families and students.  Here is a list of our tools:

  • Email:  Monthly Life Teen update (like the one you are reading now!)  Also send reminders to Year 1 and Year 2 Confirmation Candidates and weekly liturgical servers.
  • Website:  www.stoliverslifeteen.com. This website is updated frequently with information.  You can also print out forms, permission slips, etc
  • Bulletin:  you can find the Life Teen monthly calendar and Confirmation info.
  • Facebook:  Join us at St. Oliver’s Life Teen.  This is a CLOSED group for current Life Teen members and parents.  You can find a variety of info on this site from meditations, prayer requests, photos, weekly liturgical server list, etc.  Core Members are not able to be “friends” on Facebook with any teens from St. Oliver Plunkett (except teen family members).
  • Instagram:  Join us at solifeteen.  This is a CLOSED group for Life Teen members and parents.  You will find reminders, photos, insta-stories, etc.
  • GroupMe:  Various groups of teens (Seniors, Life Night Teams, etc) may start a GroupMe to notify their “group” of meeting times, and other info.

Life Teen Update—Back to School

Hello All!

Welcome back to Life Teen.  The summer just flew by and the new school year is now here!  The following is some important info to get you started for the new school year!

Senior Send Off:

7/31:  All teens are invited to say farewell to our 2019 Graduates.  Join us for pizza, Senior slideshow, and Senior goodbyes in the Life Teen Room from 6:30pm-8pm!

 RE Round Up: 

8/3-4:  All families should visit the Kane-Beltran Family Center after Mass to register for Life Teen and pick up the Fall Life Teen calendar, sign up for service and activities, and other important items.  If you have already registered…thank you and still make plans for your family to stop at the Round Up.

 Life Night:

8/11:  2020 Senior Blessing at 5pm Life Teen Mass followed by our Welcome Back to Life Teen Life Night.  Life Night is from 6pm-8:30pm.  (Seniors should meet in the Life Teen room at 4:30pm)

8/18:  “Whose Who”

8/25:  “I Mustache you a Question”

9/1:  NO Life Night

Life Teen Events:

 Parish Events:

  • Back to School Parish Mass/Vigil Mass for Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mass:  Wednesday, August 14th 7pm Church.  The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Holy Day of Obligation.  At this Mass, we are asking you to bring a donation of school supplies for our community.
  • Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mass:  Thursday, August 15th, 9am or 7pm in the Church (Remember, this is a Holy Day of Obligation)
  • St. Oliver Plunkett Ministry Fair:  August 17th and 18th after all Masses.  You and your family are invited to the Kane-Beltran Family Center to see what is going on at your parish!!!

 Service:

  • Life Teen will be posting service opportunities for teens and families throughout the school year on the “How Can I Serve” bulletin board located in the Life Teen room.  Please make sure you check it out!

Confirmation:

  • All families with students preparing for Confirmation must register for Life Teen and Confirmation class.  You can register at the RE Round Up after Masses the weekend of August 3-4 in the Kane Beltran Family Center.  Confirmation Info packet will be available at the Round Up.
  • If you are a 2nd year Confirmation student, you MUST REGISTER for Year 2 with Life Teen and Confirmation.  Confirmation Info packet will be available at the Round Up.
  • Year 1 Students/Parents:
    • 1st Year PARENT Info class:  Wednesday, August 21st in the Life Teen room.  English speaking Parent class:  6:30pm-7:30pm/Hispanic Parent Class:  8pm-9pm

    • We have received our Confirmation Liturgy date from the Archdiocese:  Sunday, April 26, 2020.  Please put this date in your calendar now!!!

Parents:  For our Life Teen program to thrive, we as parishioners need to nurture our young Church.  We need many volunteers to help with all aspects of Life Teen.  We need help “behind the scenes” and Core members.  Core members are essential to help lead our teens closer to Christ.  Do not worry that you do not “know enough”…you just need to have an open mind and open heart!!!  You are in my prayers as you think about making a commitment to help our youth!

Summer Update

Good Afternoon LT families!

As I prepare for my upcoming knee surgery, I want to remind you all of some upcoming Life Teen summer activities.  Please check your email every now and then as we are hoping to plan a few social activities during the summer too!  Email is the best way for us to get info to you!!

Life Nights:

Life Nights resume on Sunday, August 11th.  Registration packet for 2019-2020 is available on the LT Info Bulletin Board located next to the LT office.

Life Teen Events:

  • National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC): Commitment form and deposit due by May 30, 2019. If you are interested in NCYC and did not attend the info meeting, please email or call me!   NCYC Info packet is available on the LT bulletin board located in the LT room.  NCYC is a GREAT opportunity to pray and worship with 20,000 teens!  Don’t let the price scare you…we have ways to help you attend NCYC!!!
  • Mystery Mission Destination Event: During the summer, we will serve the metro Atlanta community for 4 specific days instead of 4 days for one week.  This change will help more teens and adults participate in Mission.  Mystery Mission Destination dates are: (8am-3:30pm each day)
    • Tuesday, June 18, Wednesday, June 19, Tuesday, July 23, Wednesday, July 24* (at the end of this day, we will celebrate with an end of Mission fun event)

Now you are probably thinking…what is the MYSTERY?  Each day that a teen arrives at Mission, the teen will randomly draw for their service destination.  For example, you arrive on 6/18 and you draw helping at a Senior Center, the next date that you participate, you may serve at St. Oliver’s or at the Horse Therapy Camp.  Permission slip for Mission is available at www.stoliverslifeteen.com (click on the forms tab) or you can find one on the How Can I Serve board located in the LT room.  The cost of the Mission is $25—that is for volunteering for just one day or all 4.  This fee will pay for your Mission tshirt, mission supplies and our social event following our 7/24 Mission day.  PERMISSION SLIP AND PAYMENT ARE DUE BY JUNE 2, 2019.

  • Southern Plantation Senior Center Alzheimer’s Charity Car Wash: I have been contacted by Southern Plantation Senior Center about providing teens to help with a charity car wash on SATURDAY, JUNE 22nd.  The Senior Center is looking for help from 10-2.  The Senior Center will provide the supplies, you provide the car washing.  If you are interested, please email me by 6/2/19 and/or sign up on the How Can I Serve board located in the Life Teen room.  I will then send you a permission slip, or you can pick one up from the How Can I Serve board in the LT room.
  • St. Oliver Vacation Bible School: July 15-19, 2019.  We are looking for some awesome volunteers to help with VBS this summer.  Please sign up and pick up the required info packet on the How Can I Serve Board located in the Life Teen room.  There is paperwork that needs to be completed in order for you to volunteer!
  • Life Teen Registration: Life Teen is accepting registrations for the upcoming school year. Registration packet (for Life Teen and Confirmation) is available on the Life Teen board located NEXT to the Life Teen Office.  Early bird price till June 30, 2019.  If you completed Year 1 Confirmation, you need to register for Year 2!!!

Parish Events:

  • Respect Life Ministry:  Members of the St. Oliver Plunkett Respect Life Ministry invite our Life Teen families to join them in prayer at the Planned Parenthood facility (798 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road in Lawrenceville every Saturday.  The Ministry is in front of the facility from 8:30am to 4:30pm.  The Ministry prays the rosary and hold signs with information to help the women going inside for an abortion.
  • St. Oliver’s Catholic Family Club:  Invites all families, parents, children and grandparents to join them on Saturday, June 1st from 3:15pm-4:45pm in the Kane-Beltran Family Center for a family event.
  • Patriotic Rosary:  Friday, June 7th at 7pm in the church.  Join St. Oliver’s for a Holy Hour with Prayer, Music and the Rosary.

 Miscellaneous Items:

  • I will be out of the office beginning May 20, 2019 for surgery.  I will be checking emails (youthministry@stolivers.com) and am accessible via my cellphone at 770-605-7215.
  • With summer quickly approaching, lots of our LT families will be out of town on various weeks.  With folks going out of town, this causes chaos with scheduling all the roles at the Life Teen Mass.  If you are attending the Life Teen Mass, please stop by and check in with Katie or me to see if we need help at that Mass.  Remember to dress appropriately for serving and we appreciate the help!
  • Life Teen returns on Wednesday, July 31st with our annual Senior Send Off.  Please join us as we say goodbye to our Seniors from 6:30pm-8pm in the Life Teen Room.
  • RE Round Up is after all Masses the weekend of August 3rd-4th.  Please make sure you stop by the Family Center to pick up the latest info and calendar.
  • Our Fall Retreat is scheduled for October 4-6, 2019 at Covecrest!

Mid May Update

Hello All!

The end of the school year is quickly approaching and you may be wondering what am I going to do this summer?  Well, your Life Teen group may be able to help you fill your calendar….

  • Eucharistic Congress: The Archdiocese of Atlanta hosts this annual conference on Saturday, June 22nd at the Georgia International Convention Center.   This year there will be a TEEN TRACK at the conference featuring Father Mike Schmitz.  St. Oliver’s is offering FREE bus transportation for this FREE event!  The event time (this is tentative) is 9:30am-5:30pm.  If you are interested in attending the Eucharistic Congress, please email me by 5/15.  LIMITED SPACES AVAILABLE!!!!  Here is a link to check out info on the conference: https://congress.archatl.com/

April Mid Month LT Update

Hello All!

With Spring break completed and the end of school rapidly approaching, I thought a mid-month update might be beneficial to our LT families.

Life Night:

4/14:  “Criminal”

4/21:  No Life Night  “Happy Easter”

4/28:  “King”—this is our FINAL LIFE NIGHT for the school year!

Life Teen Events:

  • Homework Hangout:  Mondays, 4/22 & 5/6, 6pm-8pm.  Meet at Boulder Creek Coffeehouse in downtown Lawrenceville for homework help or just to hangout.
  • Upper Room (Open to CURRENT Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors Bible Study):  Wednesday, 4/24 6:30pm-8pm in the Life Teen room.  Bible Study led by Core members:  Savanna Ziegler and Josh Tierra.
  • MDA Muscle Walk:  Saturday, 4/27/19.  Life Teen is participating in the walk to support our Life Teen member, Alejandro Hernandez.  All Life Teen members and families are encouraged to join us for this event.  We will meet at St. Oliver’s at 8am and carpool to the walk site, Historic Fourth Ward Park, in Atlanta or families can meet us at the Walk.   We will return to St. Oliver’s around 12:45pm.  Permission slip for the event is available on the How Can I Serve board and online at www.stoliverslifeteen.com.   Cost for the event is a $20 donation to MDA in honor of Alejandro!  Carpools need to be arranged so sign up THIS Sunday, if you will be participating!!!  Can’t make the walk…then consider making a donation to MDA.  Life Teen will be accepting donations at the 4/14 and 4/28 Life Nights!
  • Please note on the May 2019 calendar that the Stone Mountain picnic scheduled for May 10, 2019 has been postponed!
  • 2019 Seniors:  Baccalaureate Mass and Dinner Invitations were mailed the first week of April, but if you did not receive a letter, here is the invite:
    • You are cordially invited to attend the Senior Baccalaureate Liturgy and Dinner for all 2019 graduating seniors in our parish on Sunday, May 19, 2019. Our seniors will be honored and recognized at a special celebration of the Eucharist during the 5:00pm Life Teen Liturgy on Sunday, May 19th. A celebration dinner for the seniors and their immediate family members will follow in the Kane-Beltran Parish Center. We would like to request that all seniors wear their respective cap and gown to honor the many schools attended by St. Oliver seniors and to check in the Life Teen Room by 4:15pm on May 19th. We look forward to recognizing our seniors and take great pride in honoring them at this special celebration. Please RSVP by Sunday, May 5th to Lynn Ory at 770-978-6751 x43 or email youthministry@stoliver.com.
  • Junior Class:  The Junior Class will host the Senior Baccalaureate Dinner on Sunday, May 19th, following the 5:00pm Baccalaureate Mass. Life Teen will need ALL of our Junior class students and parents to make this event a success. If you can help, please call Lynn Ory at 770.978.6751 x43 or email Lynn at youthministry@stolivers.com by May 5th. Remember, your child will be in the spotlight next year!

  • Adult Education:  Our Catholic Church encourages are parents to be leaders of the faith to their children.  St. Oliver’s offers our parents opportunities to help YOU grow in your faith.  Please check the bulletin for ongoing faith formation.
  • Three Sacred Days: Preparing for The Triduum: a single session devoted to unpacking the beauty of the three Triduum liturgies: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil. Attention will be given to exploring the theology of each liturgy, the Sacred Scriptures for each night and the various ritual movements unique to each celebration. Monday, 4/15 – 7:00-8:30pm OR Tuesday, 4/16 – 9:45-11:15am
  • Coming in May: RISEN: Exploring the Sunday Gospels of the Easter Season to consider the 7 Sunday Gospels of the Easter Season and what they mean for us today. Join us on Monday, May 6th at either 9:45am or 7:00pm in the JPII Center.

Service:

  • St. Oliver Fish Fry Fridays:  Our Men’s Club offers invaluable support to our youth, so Life Teen volunteers to help with the Men’s Club Fish Fry during Lent.  We volunteer as classes, but you can help on any Friday!  We need volunteers for this Friday, 4/12.  Check in is in the Family Center Lobby.  Check in by 4:45pm in the Family Center Lobby and you should be done by 8:30pm.  Please wear closed toed shoes and a Life Teen shirt.  Hair should be pulled back.  You do receive a yummy meal for volunteering during the evening.
  • Easter Egg Hunt:  Saturday, 4/20/19,  8:30am-11am  Help the bunny hide the eggs for our young parishioners!  Sing up on the How Can I Serve board in the LT room.
  • Rowdy Roots:  Friday, 4/26/19, 6:45pm-9:15pm, Kane-Beltran Family Center.  Help our 3rd-5th graders enjoy a fun night.  Sign up on the How Can I Serve board in the LT room.

Fundraising:

St. Oliver Plunkett is officially enrolled in the Kroger Community Rewards Program! We encourage you to visit http://www.kroger.com. Once logged into your Kroger account you can search for St. Oliver Plunkett Catholic Church either by name of by our NPO (Non-Profit Organization) number GX664 and then click enroll.

New users will need to create an account which requires some basic information, a valid email address and a rewards card. If you do not have a Kroger Customer Awards card, they are available at the Customer Service desk at Kroger.

Once you are enrolled, and shop at Kroger with your rewards card, a small percentage of your total purchase will be donated to St. Oliver’s. Purchases will not count for your organization until after you register your rewards card. You must swipe your registered Kroger rewards card or use the phone number that is related to your registered Kroger rewards card when shopping for each purchase to count.

    • Life Night Attendance:  2 more Life Nights remain for school year.  You must attend both Sunday Life Nights!
    • FIATs:  All FIATs should be turned in by  April 28, 2019.  Need ideas on what to do…check out the How Can I Serve board in the Life Teen room or see me!
  • 2nd Year:
    • Confirmation Candidate Penance Service, 5/1/19, 7pm in the Church  (check in by 6:50pm!!)
    • Confirmation Rehearsal:  Sunday, 5/5/19 at 3:15pm in the Church.  Candidate and Sponsor must attend!!
    • Confirmation Liturgy is on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at the 5pm Life Teen Mass.
