8/5 Life Teen Update

Hello Teens and Families!

What a summer!  I hope you all survived the craziness and are ready to venture into a new school year.  This  update will review the exciting changes to Life Teen, so please review carefully.

Life Teen Mass:  We have plenty of seats at our 5pm Life Teen Mass!  The parish is following all the advice from the Archdiocese on keeping our parish safe.  Due to social distancing, we ask that you reserve your place for Mass.  Please check www.stolivers.com for the reservation link or the St. Oliver Plunkett  MyParish App.  If you miss the deadline to reserve your seat, please know that at the 5pm Mass, we are able to accept “walk-ins”.  Don’t forget that you will need to wear a mask.

The Sunday 9am, 1pm and 5pm Mass are live streamed on our St. Oliver Plunkett Snellville YouTube channel.

**SPECIAL EVENT**:  FAMILY FAITH FORMATION OUTDOOR MASS ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 30th AT 5PM.  Pre Mass activities will begin at 5pm (a few social distancing family games and music).  Bring your chairs, blanket, umbrella and masks.  More info to follow!

Life Teen Registration:  Families that were registered for the 2019-2020 should have received a letter and flyer from Father Cyriac in mid-July with the changes to our RE program.  (You can find the letter and flyer (English and Spanish) on the forms tab.  (Please note that Father Cyriac has reduced the price for our families:  $30 for one child, $50 for two children and $75 for three or more children.)

Following the guidelines from the Archdiocese, St. Oliver’s is moving to a Family Faith Formation program.  The family is central to our Catholic Faith. God reveals himself as a “family”—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—a communion of persons. We are created to be in communion with one another. The family also has a privileged place in catechesis. The Catechism states that “parents receive the responsibility of evangelizing their children” and calls them the “First heralds” of the faith (2225). The family is called “domestic church”—the church of the home (CCC, 2204).

What does this mean for our teens:

  • Sunday Life Nights:  will move to weekly family faith formation.  Each month families will pick up a monthly FACE! bag (Family and Church Education) which will contain weekly lesson plans, supplies and support.  In the weekly lesson you will find family focused activities plus some enrichment and challenge ideas that will help you “dive” deeper into our Catholic faith.
  • House Families:  In September, Life Teen will implement “House Families”.  All of our teens will be placed in a small group of 5-6 teens with core members.  This small group will make up a “House Family”.  During the school year, our hope is to have the House Families meet at church once a month and to be in touch with their House Family weekly.  House Families will be in contact with each other via text or GroupMe app.  One of the main components that our House Families will use is the Matthew Kelly, “Decision Point” program.  More info on our House Families will be sent out in the next few weeks.
  • Bible Studies:  Life Teen will offer a variety of Bible studies for teens.  These studies could be offered through Zoom and if conditions improve, we might be able to offer onsite.  Be on the lookout for our first Girls Bible Study in a few weeks.  (don’t worry guys…we have something instore for you too!)
  • Social Activities:  I am working on planning Zoom game nights and even a few social distancing opportunities…so stay tuned for more info!

Teens, please know that your church understands the importance of communal gatherings in fostering relationships,  so onsite gatherings will be scheduled when permissible pending changes in the COVID 19 directives.  Please continue to be patient and stay connected through the various options above!!!

Here, at St. Oliver’s, we are committed to equipping the parents to pass on the faith by providing the best resources and support. The goal of leading others to an encounter with Jesus Christ, while encouraging spiritual development and increasing knowledge about our Catholic Faith, is of utmost importance. The Faith Formation Staff looks forward to journeying with you and your family in the coming year.

Confirmation Registration:  All 9th-12th grade students interested in receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation (or 1st Communion and/or Baptism) MUST register in our Family Faith Formation program.  Once you register in the Family Faith Formation program, I will be notified if the student needs any Sacrament (Confirmation, 1st Communion and Baptism).  I will send via email the required registration form and information for the Sacrament needed.  (Remember Confirmation is a 2 year program!)  Confirmation classes will begin in October and we will follow all social distancing guidelines and directives from the Archdiocese.

2nd year students—YES, you do need to register for Family Faith Formation AND I will send you the required Confirmation registration form by email.

Miss you all and stay safe!  I continue to lift you all up in prayer.  Let’s all pray to our most loving Mother during these most difficult times!

 Memorare

Remember, most loving Virgin Mary,
never was it heard
that anyone who turned to you for help
was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence,
though burdened by my sins,
I run to your protection
for you are my mother.

Mother of the Word of God,
do not despise my words of pleading
but be merciful and hear my prayer.
Amen.

 Much love,

Lynn

7/14 Life Teen Update

Hello Teens and Families!

Here is what’s going on in Life Teen!!!  There is a lot….so please take some time to review.

Life Teen Bible Study:  Week 3 of our 4 week “Deep Dive” Bible Study is on Wednesday, 7/15 (that’s TOMORROW!) from 7pm-8:15pm via Zoom.  Join us for a consideration of the 2 Genesis Creation Stories — did you know there were 2?  Please invite family and friends to join us for the evening…so share the link with them.

Check your email for the Zoom link or go to St. Oliver’s Life Teen FB page for link.

Personal Spirituality:  In my last few Life Teen updates, I have sent you ideas to enhance your faith journey (attend Mass, journal, phone apps, read scripture, pray, music)  My next idea is have a QUIET day or at least an hour of dedicated QUIET time.  Turn off all your devices….and just find a spot where it is quiet.  Sometimes we need to disconnect from all the craziness around us…and believe me this spring/summer has been crazy!  Imagine finding a spot, closing your eyes, taking a few deep breaths and for that short time just enjoy the solitude.

Just for Teens:  Steubenville Live!  Franciscan University is offering a live-streamed version of their annual summer Steubenville Conferences this weekend, July 17-18.  The theme is “Hope Alive”.  Check out this link for all the info:  https://steubenvilleconferences.com/.  Though we are unable to register as a group this summer (18th is our Confirmation Masses), you can still register as an individual or better yet, do this with your family.  You will hear from some amazing speakers and of course some great music.  What a way to spend the weekend!  (There is a fee to attend this live streamed conference)

2nd Year Confirmation: All candidates should receive the sacrament of Reconciliation prior to the Confirmation liturgy.  Candidates being confirmed on 7/18 should attend a 9am daily Mass the week of July 13-17.  Following the Mass you attend, Father Cyriac and Father Baiju will be available for Reconciliation.  I will be at each 9am Mass to say hello and answer any questions you may have.  Don’t forget to wear your mask!

An email will be sent to all 2020 Candidates on Wednesday with last minute information!  Let us all pray for our Confirmation students and families!!!

Life Teen Registration:   With the uncertainty due to COVID-19, St. Oliver’s has had to make some major adjustments to our religious education for youth.  A letter from Father Cyriac with a religious education flyer detailing our plans for the 20-21 school year was sent out on Monday, 7/13.    In the next update, I will have more details on how this new model will minister to you (the teens) and our families.

Service Opportunities:  Great way to help our parish and the wider community!

COVID KINDNESS COLLECTION #2: Our St. Vincent de Paul Society is hosting a second food collection to benefit the Southeast Food Co-op on Saturday, July 25th from 10am to Noon in front of the JPII Center.  It’s a drive through collection, no need to get of your car.  St. Vincent de Paul Society members will collect the donations from your car.

Parish Landscaping:  Looking for mulch spreaders!  On Wednesday, July 22nd, beginning at 8:00am, we will be spreading mulch in the parking lot islands. If you can help, please call the office or email Linda Urquhart at lurquhart@stolivers.com. The number of helpers will determine the amount of bales delivered. Thanks!

Just for Parents: With COVID-19 and the change in structure, students have more free time on technology than before, leaving parents uncertain. The following link from Ministry to Parents is to help parents learn about technology one post at a time. From video tutorials to texting acronyms, these clear and quick tips will leave parents with a better understanding of the technology world. Just click on a graphic to get started.   https://ministrytoparents.com/tech-series/.

Steubenville Live for Adults:  Franciscan University is offering a version of their Steubenville Conferences for adults on Sunday, July 19th from 6:30pm-9:30pm.  Here is an invitation to register for this FREE, live streamed event:  https://steubenvilleconferences.com/events/night-of-hope/#registration

You don’t have to feel alone or disoriented by the shadows hanging over our world. We find the brightest light in the deepest darkness and we can’t help but be drawn to it. That Light is Christ our Hope.

Join our internationally celebrated presenters livestreamed from Christ the King Chapel at Franciscan University. Let us come together as Church, to be encouraged, and to pray with one voice to Christ to heal our world. Allow the Holy Spirit to breathe fresh confidence in your faith in Jesus our Redeemer, who is with us through this moment all the way into eternity.

And don’t forget to invite your friends! Pass on this link and be a light in the darkness.

Miss you all and stay safe!  I continue to lift you all up in prayer.  Here is a prayer that we can use during these tough times!

 Prayer to St. Michael

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle;
be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do you, O prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits
who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Much love,

Lynn

God our Father, Giver of life, we entrust the United States of America to Your loving care.
You are the rock on which this nation was founded.  You alone are the true source of our cherished rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Reclaim this land for Your glory and dwell among Your people.
Send Your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation´s leaders. Open their minds to the great worth of human life and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom.
Remind Your people that true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing Your will.
Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, Patroness of our land, grant us the courage to reject the “culture of death.”  Lead us into a new millennium of life.
We ask this through Christ Our Lord.
Amen.

Lynn

6/15 Life Teen Update

Hello Teens and Families!

I am checking in to see how you all are doing this summer!

Life Teen Bible Study:  We will be offering a 4 week ZOOM series beginning on Wednesday, June 24 called our “Deep Dive” Bible Study.   Our first night, we will look at Jonah:  The Reluctant Prophet. This familiar and beloved Old Testament book is filled with irony, satire and humor and is often misunderstood by many.  We’ll not only consider its original setting, but the themes that might also be useful for our discipleship today.

Our “Deep Dive” sessions will be from 7pm-8:15pm, so I encourage you to read this short book in the Old Testament.  Please invite your friends and family to join us!  ZOOM link will be emailed on Tuesday, 6/23 and can also be found on our St. Oliver Life Teen Facebook page.  Hope to see you on the 24th!

Life Teen Mass:  St. Oliver’s has resumed live worship.  We offer the following Mass schedule:  Monday-Saturday:  9am, Saturday:  5pm, Sunday:  9am, 11am, 1pm (Spanish) and 5pm Life Teen Mass.  Due to social distancing, you must reserve your place for Mass.  Please check www.stolivers.com for the reservation link or the St. Oliver Plunkett Facebook page.  Don’t forget that you will need to wear a mask.

The Sunday 9am, 1pm and 5pm Mass are live streamed on our St. Oliver Plunkett Snellville YouTube channel.

Personal Spirituality:  In previous updates, I have sent you ideas to enhance your faith journey (attend Mass, journal, phone apps)  My next idea for you to work on is to spend some time with God.  Just like any friendship, we can only grow closer to God if we’re spending time with Him.   You might be thinking…how do I do this?

    • Read the Bible (join us for Bible study!)
    • Memorize some Scripture
    • Meditate (listen to what God may be saying to you)
    • Pray (have a conversation with God)

St. Oliver Life Teen Summer Activity:  Looking for some activities for you and your family to do during the summer?  Following the 5pm Life Teen Mass on Sunday, 6/28, stop by the church courtyard to pick up a Summer “Bucket List” bucket.  This bucket is filled with lots of social, service and fun activities for you and your family to do during the summer.  Quantities are limited, so one bucket per family please!

2nd Year Confirmation: Confirmation Candidates were sent an email last week with important information!  We have a date for Confirmation:  Saturday, July 18th.  Please review the info and if you have any questions, please email me at youthministry@stolivers.com.

Life Teen Registration:  A few of you have asked…when is registration?  We are currently working on the registration packet for all of our RE families.  We are also working on getting the registration information online!!!!  Please be patient and I will keep you updated.

I cannot close this email, without asking you all to pray for the turmoil our community, country and world are currently experiencing.  The USCCB has put our a wonderful pastoral letter called “Open Wide Our Hearts”. The following is an excerpt from the pastoral letter and the Bishops closing prayer:

Christ, showed us that the very life of God is love, and love requires something of each of us. We pray that the reader will join us in striving for the end of racism in all its forms, that we may walk together humbly with God and with all of our brothers and sisters in a renewed unity. For there is no place for racism in the hearts of any person; it is a perversion of the Lord’s will for men and women, all of whom were made in God’s image and likeness. We end by adopting the words of St. Paul: Brothers and sisters, “be on your guard, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong. Your every act should be done with love” (1 Cor 16:13-14).

As in all things, we turn to prayer, asking Our Blessed Mother to intercede on our behalf:

Mary, friend and mother to all, through your Son, God has found a way to unite himself to every human being, called to be one people, sisters and brothers to each other.

We ask for your help in calling on your Son, seeking forgiveness for the times when we have failed to love and respect one another.

We ask for your help in obtaining from your Son the grace we need to overcome the evil of racism and to build a just society.

We ask for your help in following your Son, so that prejudice and animosity will no longer infect our minds or hearts but will be replaced with a love that respects the dignity of each person. Mother of the Church, the Spirit of your Son Jesus warms our hearts: pray for us, AMEN.

I am praying for you all daily!!

Much love,

Lynn
