Life Teen Weekly Update 3/25/20

Hi All!

I hope this email finds you all doing well!  I just heard that schools are closed till 4/24 and I know that must be frustrating to you guys.  I am sure you want to be hanging out with your friends and enjoying your high school experience.  Know that I am praying for you all!!!

Last week, I sent out an email with lots of info and opportunities for you and your family to take advantage of.  I really encourage our families to take some of this “together time” and use it to grow  your relationship with our most loving and caring Father.

Here are a few updates!! (#1 & #2 are IMPORTANT!!)

Sabbath Sunday:

Have you viewed our St. Oliver Plunkett online Mass?  Our parish offers you the opportunity for the Sunday Mass on Facebook LIVE at 5:30pm on Saturdays and at 1pm Sundays for the Hispanic Mass.  Daily Mass is also available on Facebook LIVE at 9am.  The St. Oliver Masses are posted on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZZdE_Gfw-bO8YWO0nkSVxw). You can also find Masses on TV/YouTube, etc.  (want to see Mass from St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC—you can find it!!)

TEENS:  ST. OLIVER PLUNKETT LIFE TEEN VIRTUAL YOUTH GROUP NEW:

Life Teen will be offering a Global Life Night Experience on Sunday, 3/29 at 5pm. The Experience will be on the Life Teen YouTube channel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIHfjz04mmc.  This 4 week series, Anchored, will a live teaching from Emily Wilson Hussem.   Following the speaker, we will have our own digital youth group on Zoom starting at 5:45pm!  Josh Tierra will lead our discussion, along with a game from Julia Hardin and Praise & Worship with Paul Hedges!  We will done around 6:30pm.  Click on this link:  https://us04web.zoom.us/j/533766952 to join our virtual group on Sunday.

Movie Monday:  Anybody watch a good movie?  I will give a prize to anyone who watched the 2 movies I mentioned in my last email!  (I will ask you a question or 2 🙂)

Talking Tuesdays:  Anybody create a sacred space in their house/room?  Post a photo of it on our FB account (St. Oliver’s Life Teen) or Instagram (solifeteen)

Word Wednesday:  Anybody crack open the good book?  If so, let us know what inspired you!

Thoughtful Thursday:  Here’s a super idea!  One of our local Senior Living facility is looking for cards/notes/letters for their residents.  What a great way to brighten the day for someone who has not been able to have visitors for quite awhile.  Your cards/notes/letters should be cheerful, easy to read (legible) and feel free to be creative.  When you sign the cards/notes/letters, only sign your first name.  Letters should be addressed to:  My Pen Pal

                         Benton House of Grayson

                         2270 Loganville Hwy.

                        Grayson, GA  30017

Fasting Friday:  I know you must all be feeling that you have sacrificed so much lately, but what a gift we have been offered during this Lenten season.

Saintly Saturday:  How is your journey to sainthood going?  I needed to pray for patience…so who else do I ask to help me?  First teen to email me the answer…gets a prize!  (I can’t get the photo of Saint on this site…so look at your email!)

The Core Team is ready to pray for any special requests that you have.  Please post your requests on our St. Oliver’s Life Teen FB page or email them to me!!  We love you guys and are here for you!!

I hope to see you all at our virtual youth group on Sunday night (check out the links above).  It will be so good to see your smiling faces.

Much love,

Lynn

St. Oliver’s Life Teen-STAY CONNECTED

Hello Life Teen families!

Though we are in the midst of social distancing, I want us to all stay spiritually connected!  This email will provide lots of online resources for teens, parents and families.

I would like to start with a message from our Bishop Konzen:  https://vimeo.com/398355936.  You can also keep updated with the Archdiocese at:  https://archatl.com/covid-19/

Here are some ideas that can be implemented by you all:

SABBATH SUNDAYS:    Catholics should still remember to keep the Sabbath holy even though there may be no chance to physically attend a Mass.  Set aside time on Sunday or Saturday evening to go through the readings for the day, to try and pray together as a family.

  1. To watch daily Mass:   http://www.catholictv.org/masses/catholictv-mass.  List from Archdiocese:  https://archatl.com/covid-19/broadcast-or-livestreamed-mass/   (As of this email, St. Oliver’s is working on a livestream of Mass at our parish.  Once we are up and running, I will share how to view)
  2. Spiritual Communion Prayer:  My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.  I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.  Amen.
  3. Daily Readings:  http://usccb.org/
  4. TEENS:  NO Life Night on Sunday…but I encourage you to watch ProjectYM Live: https://projectym.com/live/ck_subscriber_id=159253093&fbclid=IwAR0rejLoUq4mZ7Pqg5dGttrnEDYvVUUX40QLIHtdlgM4Kj7R_6jy5XbuNuM

This is a LIVE Weekly youth group night!  It begins on Sunday, 3/22 from 7pm-8pm.  The speaker for the night is Paul J. Kim (http://www.pjkmusic.com/)  Paul is a great speaker and music artist.  Check it out!!!

MOVIE MONDAYS: A great way for some bonding time with family or just finished your schoolwork and are bored!

Here are a few websites with lists for families to review:  (Please check the ratings of these movies and seek permission from your parents)

  1. https://www.ncregister.com/info/top_100_pro_catholic_movies
  2. https://www.stayathomemum.com.au/my-lifestyle/50-life-changing-movies-to-watch-with-teenagers/
  3. While googling a few things, I came across the following 2 titles, that had me cracking up…I watched these movies in the late 60s and I challenge you guys to watch moviemaking at its finest!!!  The Trouble With Angels: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPs5TtdNZro and its sequel Where Angels Go Trouble Follows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1u63CxLMnjk  (these links are trailers, but you could probably find the movie on Netflix or Amazon Prime!)

TALKING TUESDAYS:  How about spending some time in pray with and to God!  A really good idea is to set up a sacred space in your house or in your room!

  1. Great videos on prayer by Father Mike Schmitz:
    1. Power of Prayer:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiAMzghLcMA
    2. Tips on Praying:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yk8In-6KUGc
  2. This is a good time to learn some traditional Catholic Prayers:  https://www.loyolapress.com/our-catholic-faith/prayer/traditional-catholic-prayers
  3. Take time to let God talk to you too!
  4. St. Oliver’s is having Adoration in the church from 9am-5pm EVERDAY!!

WORD ON WEDNESDAYS:  Open up your Bible…read and reflect on some great stories of all times! (synopsis taken from The Catholic Youth Bible)

  1. Old Testament:
    1. Tobit-Good people suffering, love that must overcome a frightening obstacle, an uncover angel-the Book of Tobit has it all.  Part fairy tale, part love story, this book will bring a smile to your face and perhaps a tear to your eye.
    2. Jonah-You’re watching a comedy show where someone dressed like a doctor starts making outrageous comments about a person’s health.  You laugh, not because sickness is funny, but because doctors are supposed to be sensitive and caring.  That’s’ the basis of satire-that someone or something that is supposed to act one way acts another way.  You’re about to read a biblical satire about Jonah, the prophet.  The Book of Jonah uses humor to make an important point-God is the God of all people, even those we consider our enemies.
    3. Proverbs-When we first pick up the daily newspaper (do we really do this now??), many of us turn first to the advice columns.  “My Mom just does not understand me,”  we read.  “Why won’t she let me make my own decisions ?” Or “All my friends take drugs.  How do I resist the pressure?”  The book of Proverbs is the advice column of the Old Testament.  It covers everything from raising children to choosing friends.
  2. New Testament:
    1. Ephesians:  What’s the purpose of life?  Why am I alive?  What’s the point of it all anyway?  You may have asked questions like these out of simple curiosity or during a time when life wasn’t going so well.  In either case, God has an answer for you tucked away inside the Letter to the Ephesians.  This letter talks about God’s plan to save us for a union with God and one another, both now and for eternity.
    2. Romans:  Have you wondered if you’re good enough to deserve someone’s unconditional love?  Has it ever puzzled you that sometimes it is easier to do the wrong thing than the right thing?  If you have, you are not alone.  Saint Paul felt the same way.  In his Letter to the Romans, he addresses some important questions of life and faith.  But at its core, the message of the letter is simple:  We are justified-made right with God-by faith in Jesus Christ.
  3. Lectio Live:  Join Life Teen for Lectio Live:  a digital small group for teens, where we pray through one of the upcoming Sunday Mass readings!  Wednesdays @ 6pm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AShxr7fuXgs&list=PLeYPzNQ7pEh-nVk3aoHWy6tba7-LTXepo
  4. Daily Readings & Reflections:  http://usccb.org/

THOUGHTFUL THURSDAYS:  How about a random act of kindness!

  1. Help out your parents at home
  2. Hang out with your sibling,
  3. Call a friend who you have not spoken to in a while,
  4. Write a letter of gratitude to a teacher, nurse, first responder, etc and mail it or send via email.

FASTING FRIDAYS:  Offer a special sacrifice

  1. Check out these ideas:  http://www.nicksenger.com/csc/101-practical-fasting-ideas-for-lent

SAINTLY SATURDAY:  Learn about a Saint and yes…you can become one!!!

implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence,
I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer.  Amen.

(Translation done by Catholic News Service of the prayer Pope Francis recited by video March 11 for a special Mass and act of prayer asking Mary to protect Italy and the world during of the coronavirus pandemic.)

O Mary, you always shine on our path
as a sign of salvation and of hope.
We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick,
who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm.
You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need,
and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee,
we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father
and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings
and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross,
to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

I appreciate your support of our youth and the parish!  If you have any questions, please email me at youthministry@stolivers.com or call me at (770)979-2500, ext. 43.

  • Candlemas:  On the second of February, the Church celebrates the festival of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin, which may be considered as the conclusion of the series of feasts that center around the stable of Bethlehem. Christmas Day presents to us the birth of the Redeemer; the Epiphany commemorates His manifestation to the Gentiles; and the Purification reminds us of the offering of our Savior in the temple by his blessed Mother, as the Victim who should reconcile God and man. This day has been chosen by the Church for a very important ceremony, the solemn blessing of candles, whence the day is often called Candlemas. We invite you to bring candles for personal and family use to masses next weekend for a blessing. We will also offer “blessing of throats” at all masses next weekend in commemoration of the Feast of St. Blaise on Monday, February 3rd. Go to our parish website, www.stolivers.com, and click on the Candlemas picture to learn more about this feast day.
