8/5 Life Teen Update

Hello Teens and Families!

What a summer!  I hope you all survived the craziness and are ready to venture into a new school year.  This  update will review the exciting changes to Life Teen, so please review carefully.

Life Teen Mass:  We have plenty of seats at our 5pm Life Teen Mass!  The parish is following all the advice from the Archdiocese on keeping our parish safe.  Due to social distancing, we ask that you reserve your place for Mass.  Please check www.stolivers.com for the reservation link or the St. Oliver Plunkett  MyParish App.  If you miss the deadline to reserve your seat, please know that at the 5pm Mass, we are able to accept “walk-ins”.  Don’t forget that you will need to wear a mask.

The Sunday 9am, 1pm and 5pm Mass are live streamed on our St. Oliver Plunkett Snellville YouTube channel.

**SPECIAL EVENT**:  FAMILY FAITH FORMATION OUTDOOR MASS ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 30th AT 5PM.  Pre Mass activities will begin at 5pm (a few social distancing family games and music).  Bring your chairs, blanket, umbrella and masks.  More info to follow!

Life Teen Registration:  Families that were registered for the 2019-2020 should have received a letter and flyer from Father Cyriac in mid-July with the changes to our RE program.  (You can find the letter and flyer (English and Spanish) on the forms tab.  (Please note that Father Cyriac has reduced the price for our families:  $30 for one child, $50 for two children and $75 for three or more children.)

Following the guidelines from the Archdiocese, St. Oliver’s is moving to a Family Faith Formation program.  The family is central to our Catholic Faith. God reveals himself as a “family”—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—a communion of persons. We are created to be in communion with one another. The family also has a privileged place in catechesis. The Catechism states that “parents receive the responsibility of evangelizing their children” and calls them the “First heralds” of the faith (2225). The family is called “domestic church”—the church of the home (CCC, 2204).

What does this mean for our teens:

  • Sunday Life Nights:  will move to weekly family faith formation.  Each month families will pick up a monthly FACE! bag (Family and Church Education) which will contain weekly lesson plans, supplies and support.  In the weekly lesson you will find family focused activities plus some enrichment and challenge ideas that will help you “dive” deeper into our Catholic faith.
  • House Families:  In September, Life Teen will implement “House Families”.  All of our teens will be placed in a small group of 5-6 teens with core members.  This small group will make up a “House Family”.  During the school year, our hope is to have the House Families meet at church once a month and to be in touch with their House Family weekly.  House Families will be in contact with each other via text or GroupMe app.  One of the main components that our House Families will use is the Matthew Kelly, “Decision Point” program.  More info on our House Families will be sent out in the next few weeks.
  • Bible Studies:  Life Teen will offer a variety of Bible studies for teens.  These studies could be offered through Zoom and if conditions improve, we might be able to offer onsite.  Be on the lookout for our first Girls Bible Study in a few weeks.  (don’t worry guys…we have something instore for you too!)
  • Social Activities:  I am working on planning Zoom game nights and even a few social distancing opportunities…so stay tuned for more info!

Teens, please know that your church understands the importance of communal gatherings in fostering relationships,  so onsite gatherings will be scheduled when permissible pending changes in the COVID 19 directives.  Please continue to be patient and stay connected through the various options above!!!

Here, at St. Oliver’s, we are committed to equipping the parents to pass on the faith by providing the best resources and support. The goal of leading others to an encounter with Jesus Christ, while encouraging spiritual development and increasing knowledge about our Catholic Faith, is of utmost importance. The Faith Formation Staff looks forward to journeying with you and your family in the coming year.

Confirmation Registration:  All 9th-12th grade students interested in receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation (or 1st Communion and/or Baptism) MUST register in our Family Faith Formation program.  Once you register in the Family Faith Formation program, I will be notified if the student needs any Sacrament (Confirmation, 1st Communion and Baptism).  I will send via email the required registration form and information for the Sacrament needed.  (Remember Confirmation is a 2 year program!)  Confirmation classes will begin in October and we will follow all social distancing guidelines and directives from the Archdiocese.

2nd year students—YES, you do need to register for Family Faith Formation AND I will send you the required Confirmation registration form by email.

Miss you all and stay safe!  I continue to lift you all up in prayer.  Let’s all pray to our most loving Mother during these most difficult times!

Remember, most loving Virgin Mary,
never was it heard
that anyone who turned to you for help
was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence,
though burdened by my sins,
I run to your protection
for you are my mother.

Mother of the Word of God,
do not despise my words of pleading
but be merciful and hear my prayer.

 Much love,
